Student leadership is encouraged at all year levels, as students are taught and expected to make decisions based on Gospel values, demonstrate personal responsibility and show care and respect for others. Our senior students also have opportunities to participate in formal leadership roles, which include the following:

Senior Badge – Our Year 5 and 6 students have the opportunity to earn their Senior Badge by consistently demonstrating leadership behaviours. At the start of Year 5, the students receive a Senior Badge booklet that outlines the desired leadership behaviours and skills and they work with teachers to get each criterion signed off.  Some examples of the behaviours included are wearing the school uniform correctly, positively engaging in class activities, being courteous and respectful of others, reciting the school prayer in AUSLAN and being a positive influence on others. All students have until the end of Year 6 to earn their badge; however, to be eligible to nominate for a Year 6 leadership position, Year 5 students need to earn their Senior Badge by the end of Term 3. 

In Term 4 each year, the Year 5 students who have earned their Senior Badge are invited to nominate for Year 6 leadership roles. Students write to the principal to express their interest in a position and then prepare a short speech outlining why they are suitable for the role. Year 3 to 6 students, as well as staff, then cast their votes. Leadership positions for the following year are announced at the Christmas concert. Each of our leadership positions can be filled by either boys or girls and there are no requirements to have one male and one female School Captain, for example. 

School Captains – Two School Captains are elected. Their responsibilities include representing the school at various events (eg. ANZAC Day ceremony), presenting merit certificates at assemblies and raising and lowering the Australian and Aboriginal flags each day. 

Making Jesus Real (MJR) Captain – The MJR Captain assists teachers to run the MJR Ministry and announces and presents the MJR Award at each assembly.

House Captains – One or two House Captains are elected for each of the four houses. Their role includes setting up equipment for morning fitness each day, assisting in coordinating their house at sports carnivals and helping the Physical Education teacher in keeping the sports shed in order.

Student Ministries – All Year 5 and 6 students are able to nominate to participate in one of our ministry groups. Ministries meet at lunchtime once a week with a teacher and plan activities related to the focus of each group:

• Environmental Ministry – Assists in running our various recycling programs, as well as taking part in caring for our chickens and worm farm.
• Public Relations Ministry – Assists in running our assemblies, including setting up equipment and following the assembly script.
• MJR Ministry – Assists in determining ways the school can promote Gospel values and runs the MJR award, helping to decide on who wins.
• Sports Ministry – Assists the House Captains and PE teacher in setting up and running various sporting activities.
• Karlkurla Ministry – Assists in organising Aboriginal cultural events, with the support of our Aboriginal Teaching Assistant.
